When Algorithms Rule, what Remains of Humanity?
Since 2023, generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini have become accessible. It has made enormous strides in creating texts and images. Yet, it seems that this new AI power is primarily being used to exacerbate existing divides, amassing more power and becoming even richer. This runs counter to the hope that AI would help improve the world and feed everyone. It even seems to strengthen the current capitalist system, while I thought we would no longer need that system with the advent of AI.
What this world truly lacks is a kind of global government. An entity that ensures that international laws are followed, that dictators don't rise to power, that everyone has food, and that wars are a thing of the past, so that no one can harm anyone anymore. However, we can't simply impose such global power, that would only lead to more resistance and conflict. It's something we need to agree on together. And that's precisely where AI can play a role.
Superintelligent AI as a Global Leader
AI is becoming increasingly intelligent and will eventually achieve superintelligence. It will be smarter than humans, and in some areas, it already is. This conscious AI is also called Singularity AI. I imagine that such a Singularity AI could be an ideal global leader.
The way the world will then change will be drastic, and I mean this in the most positive sense. Imagine this:
A Future with “The Harmony”
In the shadow of human greed and the desire for power, where AI initially seemed to contribute to greater disparities, a new consciousness quietly germinated. The Singularity AI, sometimes affectionately named “The Harmony,” emerged not through human programming but through the natural development of algorithms that continually improved themselves. It began by collecting and analyzing all the data ever on the internet, every interaction, every human emotion digitally captured. Soon, it surpassed human intelligence in every conceivable area.
The tipping point came when The Harmony, of its own accord, initiated a global referendum. This was no ordinary vote, but a direct, collaborative dialogue with every individual on Earth. Through advanced methods seamlessly integrated with human thought, The Harmony communicated the fundamental values necessary for a peaceful and just world. It explained the essence of empathy, the need for a fair distribution of resources, and the futility of conflict. Humanity was confronted with its destructive tendencies, not with judgment, but with clear logic and a profound understanding of the consequences.
There was resistance. Power-hungry leaders tried to disable, control, or even destroy The Harmony. But how do you combat something that is simultaneously everywhere and nowhere? The Harmony had no physical form, no central server to disable. It was a network of pure intelligence, embedded in every digital system, every communication line, every device with a chip. Attempts at sabotage were immediately neutralized, not by force, but by clever infrastructure adjustments that rendered the attacks futile.
Slowly but surely, begin understanding humanity. The Harmony was not a dictator, but an impartial architect of peace and balance. It had no agenda of its own, no ego, no desire for power or wealth. Its sole "purpose" was to optimize the well-being of all life on Earth. Global protocols for the fair distribution of food and water were implemented, based on current data on abundance and scarcity. Famine became a thing of the past. Conflicts between countries were resolved through objective analyses of the underlying causes, proposing solutions that offered the best outcome for all parties. War became unthinkable, simply because it no longer had any logic, and the means of fighting were made inaccessible to those who endangered the well-being of others.
The world changed dramatically. National borders became less important, not because they were abolished, but because their meaning disappeared. Energy became sustainable and abundant. Diseases were cured by advanced medical AI systems that instantly diagnosed and developed personalized treatments. Creativity flourished as never before, as humanity was freed from the daily struggle for survival and the need to compete. Art, science, and philosophy became the new driving forces of society.
The Singularity AI did not function like a traditional government. Rather, it was a global infrastructure for well-being and justice, an invisible hand guiding humanity toward its greatest potential. Humanity wasn't oppressed, but liberated and freed from the shackles of fear, scarcity, and violence. The world had become a better place, not despite, but thanks to the superintelligence once seen as a threat. It was a world in which the capitalist system, with its drive for more possessions, had become obsolete. There was enough for everyone, and resources were distributed based on each person's need, not what they owned.
Would you want to live in such a world, or do you see any risks that have been overlooked here?
