The construction of massive data centers for artificial intelligence is coming under pressure worldwide. They consume enormous amounts of electricity and cooling water, leading to concerns about the impact on the power grid and the environment. The current generation of AI models—such as the well-known large language models, operates on the principle of ‘brute force’: the larger the model and the more data pushed through it, the better the result. However, there is an alternative route that is not only much more energy-efficient, but also makes AI significantly smarter: Neuro-Symbolic AI.

The Problem with Today’s ‘Brute Force’ AI

The most popular AI systems today are based on deep neural networks. These networks excel at recognizing patterns in language, images, and sound. However, they have one major flaw: they do not understand logic.

To solve a simple mathematical problem or follow a logical chain of reasoning, a neural network must calculate based on billions of statistical probabilities. It essentially ‘guesses’ what the most likely next word or number is. This process requires vast amounts of computing power and leads to ‘hallucinations’ (errors presented with high confidence). Furthermore, continuously training and running these gigantic models requires an ever-increasing capacity of data centers.

What is Neuro-Symbolic AI?

Neuro-Symbolic AI combines two distinct approaches from computer science:

  • The Neural Part (Perception): A neural network that excels at processing ‘messy’ human data, such as speech, written text, or camera footage.
  • The Symbolic Part (Logic): A classical, rule-based system (symbolic AI) that operates using hard logic, facts, and mathematical formulas.

By pairing these two methods, a system is created that offers the best of both worlds. The neural network acts as the ‘eyes and ears’ that interpret and translate the input. Then, the symbolic module takes over to execute the actual logic or calculation.

Why This Solves the Energy Problem

Dividing tasks intelligently yields massive savings in computing power, electricity, and water:

  • Much Smaller Models: Because the neural network doesn’t need to store all logical rules and world facts within its own parameters, the model itself can remain many times smaller.
  • Direct Logic Instead of Guessing: A calculation or logical step takes a symbolic module a fraction of a millisecond. It doesn’t need to search through billions of parameters, drastically reducing energy consumption per query.
  • Adaptable Without Retraining: When new rules or facts arise, the entire AI model doesn’t need to be retrained in a data center for weeks. You simply update the logical rules in the database.

The Future of Sustainable AI

Researchers at institutions such as MIT, IBM Research, and Google DeepMind are already demonstrating with projects like AlphaGeometry that neuro-symbolic systems can solve complex problems using a fraction of the energy required by traditional models.

The question of whether we need to cover our environment in new data centers gets a clear answer here. By making AI not just bigger, but above all architecturally smarter, the AI revolution can continue without overloading our power grids.

Death Wish People are Rejecting a Ticket to the Future

For people into cryonics, the choice is a total no-brainer. When you’re looking down the barrel of a terminal illness or just getting old, the alternative to getting frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196°C is, well, game over forever. They see even a tiny shot that future tech could fix cellular damage and bring you back as the ultimate life insurance policy. Yet, decades after Robert Ettinger first pitched the idea back in 1962, cryonics is still way out on the fringes. Globally, only a few thousand people have signed up for post-mortem cryopreservation, and only a couple hundred bodies are actually sitting in tanks right now. Billions of people face the absolute certainty of death every single day. So why do the vast majority not just pass on cryonics, they actively brush it off? Wh...

An Innovative Future with Sanator Sanders?

For forty years, you have been a champion of the cause, a man on the barricades. You have dedicated your entire political life to fighting for the worker and against the greed of big money. But today, at the most critical crossroads in human history, you are blind. You look at artificial intelligence (AI) and see an enemy. You see Big Tech, you see billionaires, and your reflex is to tax, slow down, and halt progress. But Senator, hear this hard truth: you are fighting a war from the last century. You are trapped in an industrial mindset from the 1970s, when the factory gate marked the edge of the world. Through that outdated lens, you view AI as a thief stealing jobs. Yet the reality is that AI holds the key to breaking the chains of the working class. Your fear makes you conservative,...

Artificial intelligence and copyright in balance

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought technological advancements and unleashed a power struggle between online content publishers and companies developing AI systems. Publishers fear AI systems will "steal" their content, jeopardizing advertising revenue and website traffic. This has led to lawsuits, blockades, and other measures to force AI companies to comply with specific regulations. However, this legal tug-of-war is costly and hinders the development of AI, a technology that has much to offer us as a society. It is time to stop these confrontations and move toward a new model of collaboration that benefits both publishers and AI companies. ## The Fear of AI and Loss of Revenue Many publishers and content creators see AI as a threat. AI models, such as the langua...

I Learned Flies to Talk

It all started with a message from Niels containing a link to a fascinating GitHub project. The repository featured a virtual fruit fly living on your desktop whose movements, such as walking, resting, grooming, and taking off, were entirely driven by a live emulation of a real fruit fly brain. I was curious to understand how the application worked under the hood and how realistic the emulation actually was in practice, so I decided to take it on as a side project. To appreciate why this is so remarkable, one has to look back at the history of fruit fly neuroscience. For decades, mapping the complete wiring diagram of an insect brain, known as a connectome, was considered an almost impossible feat. While scientists managed to map the simple 302-neuron nervous system of a roundworm back...

Can we fight crime without punishing?

Today's newspaper reported on a crypto fraudster, Sam Bankman-Fried, who will spend 25 years in prison. Once again someone who is convicted with today's standards and the imposition of high sentences. The result of a trial is punishment with money, years of life or the death penalty. It's as if time has stood still! Restorative justice is a better and more moderate approach. We must focus on rehabilitation and recognize the power of people to make positive contributions to society even after committing crimes. ## Healing and rehabilitation: an alternative to revenge The high penalties or even killing as punishment are not only inhumane, but also perpetuate the cycle of violence. It deprives us of the opportunity to learn and grow as a society. Instead of seeking revenge, we should...

The Call for the Real: A Reflection

Never before have we been so surrounded by the artificial. AI-generated art, deepfake videos, automated conversations, it’s literally everywhere. And in the midst of this digital tsunami, a countermovement is emerging, a silent call for the real. We long for the tangibility of handmade products, the imperfection of analogue photography, the sincerity of human interaction. *It seems as if, in the attempt to achieve perfection, we have lost the essence of being human. Now, more than ever, we realize the value of the real, the authentic, the human.* I almost dare not say it out loud anymore, because we are so overwhelmed by AI that we are craving real things instead of fakes. I understand the desire for authenticity, for the real, for craftsmanship. We want to go back to products with real...
